Churchland Loses Tournament But Not Hope

February 17, 2017

The 4A Regional Wrestling Tournament was held at Churchland High School on Friday, February 10th and Saturday, February 11th. There were a total of 24 teams and roughly 100 wrestlers competing.

Churchland wrestler Charles Grant lost his match on Friday and described his performance afterwards, “So far, I’m not doing that great, but the day is still young and we have today and tomorrow.” Charles ended up winning on Saturday and placing 8th in his weight class.

Trenton Holliman, who wrestled at 106 pounds, faced a competitor from Powhatan, who came in 4th. Holliman came out on the losing end of that match. “My opponents were very competitive, but I still put up a fight.” Powhatan scored 144 more points than Churchland, so that one loss didn’t seem so bad.

Darien Willis, who also lost his match, said, “Honestly, the day is still going, but I did terrible.” He went on to say, “We’re a team full of freshmen wrestling people that are seniors.”

The team, the coaches, and everyone involved with Churchland Wrestling was frustrated.

Churchland scored 7 points in the two day tournament. The team with the most points was Eastern View, with 243. They were the clear winner considering second place Great Bridge scored 188.5 points, a total of 54.5 points lower than Eastern View. The team closest to Churchland’s 7 points was Lake Taylor with 23.

By the end of the two-day tournament, Churchland proved their struggles were real. Although they lost, they all put up a serious fight and didn’t give up. No wrestler got completely destroyed, they just didn’t get the points.

Churchland wasn’t ready for the experienced competition, or the matches against the former regional champions.
