Sydney Tumwa Receives Honorable Mention For Artwork

Sydney Tumwa, a tenth-grade student, received an honorable mention from the Scholastic Writing and Art Competition, for her printmaking piece.

“I was surprised, I did not expect it because it was my first time doing (printmaking).”

According to her art teacher, Ms.Stith, Tumwa was one of the twelve students that submitted artwork to the competition via dropbox.

Her piece, called “Alarm” depicts a face with wide eyes and a gaping mouth. The essence of shock is caught beautifully in bold yellow and red hues with a black and white stripe down the center of the piece.

Though she just started printmaking, Tumwa has been interested in the technique ever since she could remember. Her father is an artist, which is how she was exposed to it as a child.

“I look up to him and what he does.”

Using her father as her inspiration, she will continue to create.
